High-Speed Doors for Industrial and Commercial Facilities

Southern Door Company offers high-speed doors for commercial and industrial openings across the Wiregrass region. If your facility sees forklift, vehicle, and pedestrian traffic passing through a doorway dozens of times a day, a fabric high-speed door keeps that opening sealed between passes. A standard overhead door or roller door takes time to travel, leaving the opening exposed to wind, heat, cold, dust, and pests. A high-speed fabric door opens and closes in seconds. We carry the Raynor RapidCoil line in three models: the RC200, RC300, and RC300HD. Below is what each model does, where it fits, and how to choose the right high-speed door for your facility. For our full commercial door lineup, see our commercial page.

What Is a Fabric High-Speed Door?

The high-speed doors Southern Door Company carries are fabric doors from Raynor’s RapidCoil line.

These flexible fabric doors use a 27 oz. reinforced PVC vinyl curtain on a motorized system that opens and closes in seconds. Raynor describes the RapidCoil line as using “the industry’s best sealing technology which gives an extremely tight seal against wind, rain, and contaminants” (Raynor, RapidCoil). Depending on size, RapidCoil doors “can open as fast as 8 feet per second in some applications,” according to Raynor. All models come in nine colors with vision panel options for visibility and multiple activation methods.

Benefits of High-Speed Doors for Your Facility

The primary advantage of a high-speed door over a standard overhead or roll up door is speed. A faster opening and closing cycle means less time for air exchange, dust, pests, and temperature loss through the doorway. Raynor states that combining a tight seal with high-speed operation creates a more energy-efficient environment in manufacturing settings. For more on how high-speed doors and loading dock seals work together, see our post on how loading docks lose energy through gaps.

Other benefits that Raynor attributes to the RapidCoil line include improved traffic flow and increased productivity (RC300HD and RC300), reduced maintenance from the push-pull drive technology (RC300 and RC300HD), and a curtain designed to perform thousands of cycles per day. Safety features across all models include photo eyes, a soft bottom edge, and a reversing edge sensor.

Raynor RapidCoil Models

Raynor builds three RapidCoil models, each covering a different range of opening sizes, operating speeds, and environments. Raynor says all RapidCoil doors “have been engineered with a patented doors system, with a unique design, that leads the industry of High Performance doors.” All three use a 27 oz. reinforced PVC vinyl curtain. Raynor states that “RapidCoil doors are designed to perform thousands of cycles per day.”

RC200

Raynor describes the RC200 as “designed for small- to medium-interior technology applications up to 12′ wide and 12′ high” and “designed for interior environments” (Raynor, RapidCoil RC200). It is gravity operated with a flexible ballast. Opening speed is up to 48 inches per second; closing speed is 24 inches per second. Minimum opening size is 3′ x 7′. The RC200 uses a bead seal that Raynor says “prevents air migration better than virtually any other door on the market” and is “ideal for use in dry and cleanroom environments.” Operational wind resistance is rated by Raynor at up to 18 MPH.

Raynor labels the RC200’s impact recovery feature “Self Repairing.” A two-way break-away design lets the curtain separate from the side guides on contact and re-insert at the header with the push of a button. No tools required. Raynor says in its RapidCoil overview that this self-repairing technology “results in fewer service calls and minimal energy loss.”

RC300

The RC300 is designed for interior and exterior applications up to 18′ wide and 18′ high (Raynor, RapidCoil RC300). It uses a gear-driven push-pull system with an opening speed of 48 inches per second and an optional 96 inches per second. Raynor says the push-pull technology “provides superior performance in high-pressure environments and reduces maintenance.” The curtain is “crash forgiving, self re-inserting, and exceptionally safe for users.” It is “free of stiffeners, as well as rigid wind bars or bottom bars” and runs inside friction-free UHMW inner guides for a tight seal. Wind resistance is rated up to 60 MPH, average size dependent.

On impact, the door dislodges from the side guides and automatically returns to the open position with no manual intervention, according to Raynor. Raynor says the RC300 provides “reliable environment control while increasing productivity and safety.” An optional code-compliant emergency egress system is also available.

RC300HD

Raynor designs the RC300HD for exterior applications with extreme pressure requirements (Raynor, RapidCoil RC300HD). It shares the RC300’s 18′ x 18′ maximum size, push-pull operation, and speed options (48 in/sec standard, optional 96 in/sec). The difference is wind resistance: Raynor rates the RC300HD to withstand winds up to 115 MPH, average size dependent, with the qualification that “Wind Load is not certified.” Raynor states on its RapidCoil RC300HD page that the RC300HD “protects your environment against the wind, rain, snow, dirt, and harsh temperatures” while “improving traffic flow” and “providing energy savings, employee comfort, and environmental control.”

High-Speed Door Safety Features

All three RapidCoil models include a soft bottom edge, photo eyes, and a reversing edge. Raynor’s bottom edge detector reverses the door when it meets an obstacle during closing. An infrared photocell sensor inside the side guide detects pedestrians and vehicles, opening the door and holding it until the path is clear.

Impact recovery works differently by model. The RC200 uses its two-way break-away and header re-insertion design. The RC300 and RC300HD re-insert automatically after an impact. Neither approach requires tools or manual re-threading to restore operation.

Where High-Speed Doors Fit in Industrial and Commercial Facilities

Raynor industrial doors cover “industrial, commercial, agricultural, or loading dock door applications,” according to Southern Door Company’s commercial page. Within the RapidCoil line, Raynor designs the RC200 for interior technology applications, the RC300 for exterior and interior openings up to 18′ x 18′, and the RC300HD for exterior openings with extreme pressure requirements. Raynor’s RapidCoil overview says the door’s guide technology lets it operate “in harsh industrial environments such as manufacturing, processing and general warehousing.”

How to Choose a High-Speed Door for Your Facility

Work through these questions before calling for a quote:

  • What is the opening width and height? (RC200 maximum is 12′ x 12′; RC300 and RC300HD reach 18′ x 18′.)
  • Is the opening interior, exterior, or both?
  • Is it exposed to wind, rain, or temperature swings?
  • How often does traffic pass through, and what kind: forklifts, other vehicles, pallet jacks, or pedestrians?
  • What speed do you need? The RC300 and RC300HD offer an optional 96 in/sec opening speed.
  • Do you need vision panels for visibility through the closed curtain?
  • What activation method fits your operation?

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is a High-Speed Door?

A high-speed door opens and closes faster than a standard roll up door or overhead door, cutting the time the opening is exposed to outside air, dust, and pests. Fabric high-speed doors like the Raynor RapidCoil use a reinforced PVC vinyl curtain on a motorized system. These fabric doors are built for industrial and commercial openings that see frequent daily traffic.

How Fast Does a RapidCoil Door Open?

The RC200 opens at up to 48 inches per second. The RC300 and RC300HD open at 48 inches per second, with an optional speed of 96 inches per second (equivalent to 8 feet per second). Raynor states that RapidCoil doors “can open as fast as 8 feet per second in some applications,” depending on size.

Can a RapidCoil Door Be Used Outside?

The RC200 is designed for interior environments only. The RC300 handles both interior and exterior applications. The RC300HD is built for exterior openings with extreme pressure requirements and carries a wind resistance rating of up to 115 MPH, average size dependent. Raynor notes that wind load on the RC300HD is not certified.

What Happens if a Forklift Hits the Door?

Raynor describes the RC300 curtain as “crash forgiving.” On impact, the curtain dislodges from the side guides and returns to the open position automatically. The RC200 uses a two-way break-away design with re-insertion at the header. Neither requires tools to get the door running again.

What Warranty Does Raynor Offer on RapidCoil Doors?

Raynor’s published warranty for the RapidCoil line is a “5-year unlimited cycle warranty on the drive motor and 5-years on fabric workmanship” with “1-year on balance of components.” That is Raynor’s product warranty. Southern Door Company separately offers a 1-year warranty on all parts and labor from the date of installation.
